What is Framing in light and dark?
According to Google: "In visual arts and particularly cinematography, framing is the presentation of visual elements in an image, especially the placement of the subject in relation to other objects. Framing can make an image more aesthetically pleasing and keep the viewer's focus on the framed object(s)." And for light and dark "Play with light and shadows to sublimate the everyday life. Through light and shadow photography, you can transform people into anonymous silhouettes, sometimes into threatening shadows. You can attenuate the depth of field with darkness to get graphic and mysterious photographs."
Statement Of Intent
I aim to produce the best of the best pictures to demonstrate and communicate my ideas and there meaning behind each image. At the end of this project I will choose and show my best most developed photographs and place them in this website so they can be viewed and hopefully my grades would be exceed my expectations thanks to my images.
For my theme I picked framing and the reason why I didn't pick light and dark not because it is hard but because I prefer framing and I am sure I could achieve a grade better than dark and light. At the moment I chose two photographers that have inspired me and I believe are popular in many ways and they are Robert Adams and Lee Friedlander. My theme is framing and I chose to this not because it was easy but because how I think it could be more effective than light and dark and actually have a proper effect or emotion on someone who sees it.
I'm going to use black and white because it will have an give a feeling that it was taken in past but it was actually taken in the present and that makes it more effective and powerful and it also creates this type of feeling that that the abstract of the past can create a stronger emotion than the future.
The Photographers I am interested in are Adam Burton for his west American countryside photos and Lee fried lander for his pictures taken while inside a car which makes it look like its telling a story about the journey of someone. The skills I want to develop is Shutter speed at at most because it's the one skill that I couldn’t perfect in and to maximize my skill in shutter speed I could take pictures that could possibly even amaze the photographers themselves.
Another skill I wanna develop in this project is that it's not much of a skill but instead a habit and its that I have to take lots and multiple amounts of photos/pictures because it makes more easier to find the perfect one than taking one perfect picture which isn’t even that perfect at all.

My First Photographer:
Robert Adams
I chose Robert Adams as my first photographer because I felt that as if he was different to the rest of the other framing specialist in photography as he doesn't use a frame to help him take his image or try to create of find something similar to a frame and create that image, I believe that his images are so amazing and perfect and the angles in which he takes them his images are more closer to the subject of framing then a piece of frame itself.
My Second Photographer:
Lee Friedlander
I chose Lee Friedlander as my second photographer because his way of taking framing pictures intrested me the most as he used a very clever way of taking his images, by using his car windows as a frame for his images I think this is amazing.

Robert Adams 5Cs:
Context
According to google: "This image was taken by Robert Adams and he takes images in west america mostly in the countryside.Born: 8 May 1937 (age 81 years), Orange, New Jersey, United States.Robert Adams is an American photographer who has focused on the changing landscape of the American West. His work first came to prominence in the mid-1970's through his book The New West and his participation in the exhibition New Topographic: Photographs of a Man-Altered Landscape in 1975.".
Content
In the Image I can see a single tree on the side of a road, I can also see a house to the right, in the background it looks like a beach with the shore coming up and finally I can also see a a few mountains to the right or hills you cant really tell because of the light and dark colour. It does look old and a bit rusty but that's what make's it look interesting. It is also black and white and I think its in the west of america according to my photographer. Its made from the country side of america and that means its just structure which makes the effect show how beautiful nature is in the country side of america. In the background you can see a seaside or a beach which also stretches the effect of nature and its beauty. If you look more in depth to the background where you can see the mountains its a bit foggy or steamy like which makes the background behind the seaside hidden and more mysterious.
Connection
The theme of this photo is framing light light and dark , it is relevant to my work because I am also doing framing in light and dark and I plan on doing country side framing in light and dark which is what this photographer does. The image links to my work because since I am focusing on framing in light and dark the country side this image is the best possible way to describe what I will be doing as well, However it may not be as perfect as the image that is shown yet it should be almost as good. But I can also tell that the image is trying to show some kind of feeling with a lonely tree in the middle and no other trees in site, this makes me think that the photographer himself is trying to show me a story or give a feeling which again is very effective.
Comment
I really like this image a lot because as I said before it gives of an emotion and it makes me think that the tree itself has a feeling of loneliness and simple, the photo has many good things and detail about it but I'm only going to talk about some of them. For example the tree being in the middle and almost of the edge is effective in my opinion also the beach and the seaside at the background also shows the peacefulness the image looks and feels. This is the type of images I would love to take not because it would make me reach a very high grade but also because it gives of a feeling of peace that not only I would feel but also many others.I can easily use this to inspire my images but also the way I take them for example from a viewpoint and the black and white colour.
Composition
The focus point of this image is more of a middle perspective viewpoint however I also get the kind of feeling that it was taken from a birds eye view. You cant really tell the lightning since its a black and white photo but if you look at the background and check the water in the seaside by checking the reflection of the water you can tell if its day time or night time and its is day time. I am one hundred percent sure they have used rule of thirds because if you do imagine all the lines you could easily all the good parts of the image, In the middle the is tree is focused on mostly and on the outskirts it does still look effective because of the background but its mostly focused on the tree. My has drawn straight away to the tree in the middle because its something that would be eye catching to many people not because its in the middle but its the only odd thing out and alone. The depth of field is large/deep is because you can see in the photo everything is focused if it was shallow/short you could only see the tree focused and not the background.
Lee Friedlander 5Cs:
Context
According to Google: "Lee Fried lander is an American photographer and artist. In the 1960s and 1970s Friedlander evolved an influential and often imitated visual language of urban "social landscape," with many of his photographs including fragments of store-front reflections, structures framed by fences, posters and street signs. This image/photo was taken by Lee FriedLander and this image is in one of his photo's in america by car. His book is called America by car and inside it shows many numerous photos. This is one of his photos I picked out and I like the most and I will be describing why. He was born 14 July 1934 (age 84 years), Aberdeen, Washington, United States meaning that his photos were taken at around the 20th century.".
Composition/Content
The Image has many interesting things about it and it has many hidden meanings that you can pick out to describe the true story of the image. For example the focus point of this image I would say is a even/balanced perspective mainly focusing on the man in the image as it is the first thing that catches my eyes and I am sure it would catch most people's eyes if they were to see this photo.I'm very sure that they have used rule of thirds because if you imagine the lines and 9 sections you could tell that the middle section is showing the man/officer and the rest of the sections is either showing the background of the image or the parts of the car.I also love the fact that taking the picture in that way and showing the window of the car makes it really effective in my opinion because it as if its showing a frame or taking a picture of a frame in light and dark and that is the theme I am focusing on.
The depth of field is very shallow and short because it is focusing on the officer if it was deep and large it would focus on the officer and the mountains and countryside in the background. As I said my eye is instantly drawn to the officer in the center of the image and she has achieved this (I believe) through rule of thirds and the depth of field and I explained in detail. I believe that he hasn't used a tripod because it wouldn't make a difference I think and he is inside a car after all. There is a background and they are just landscapes and you can tell the effect that the image gives off a more rural feeling and a country side feeling. The image looks old due to the background and the colour of the image, the colour of the image is Black and White, I think its somewhere in either west Virginia or Kentucky.

Connection
This links to my theme a lot because if you can tell the window of the car is almost acting as if it is a frame and it is framing in light and dark, the officer and the country side/ landscapes in the background. The theme of this image is framing and so is mine it also what I will be focusing on in the future for this component I believe their is a message behind this image but I cant seem to find it yet however It is very inspiring and it has helped me a lot hopefully I could take something almost as good as this image or possibly better. However something that both Robert Adam's and Leefried Lander have in common is their background it is mostly landscapes and also if you can tell its a bit of mountains and then its covered with fog in both pictures that is also another part of the image I like.
Comment
I like this image a lot because its amazing in every bit and its got all the perfect things and all the settings that make the image better is easily applied and I am proud to find this picture. The images strengths is too much for me to write about but I will tell you some of them for example: The depth of field, The rule of thirds ,the composition, the focus point , the effective frame and the perfect lighting on the officer. What I also love about this image is that the officer is smiling making the image feel more relaxed and peaceful however if the officer was sad the image would have given a depressed feeling or miserable yet its the opposite.
First Photo shoot plan:
For my photo shoot plan I had planned quite a lot and I spent time thinking how I should take the pictures and etc, so I hope it is successful.
Photo Shoot 1:
I think that my first photo shoot went perfect as it relates to Robert Adams work as well as my own way of refining it , if you look at the mood board for Adam Robert you can see the similarities between my first photo. In the first few images I linked them to the mood board I developed that has to do with Robert Adams work.
In the end I think I did well however my standards were quite high but that's how you develop in life you learn from your mistakes.

During Photoshop it was hard to choose on what I could do to the image I took and refine it to make my grades higher but in the end I chose to zoom on the tree and since it was already black and white thanks to the change in settings of my camera I only cropped it and changed its image color to make it look like it was from the past times. I still learned quite a lot thanks to this.
Final Image:
This is my final image and I am proud of it and It looks perfect in my opinion.

Using tutorials to refine my images:
I used this video to help me refine my Photoshop as in my last shoot with the final image it was quite hard to develop further. I have learned quite a lot from this and if you would like to watch just click on the button.
Photo shoot 2 will link to this image perfectly.
Photo shoot 2:
During this photo shoot I wasn't as prepared as I thought I would be but in the end it worked out as I took images that were linked to my second photographer that I picked in this project Lee Friedlander , this is because its got images of my model standing their with his hands by his side and in in some he is smiling which again is linked with the Lee Friedlander image that I used the 5C's on. In the end I believe this photo shoot was good for my project.

Final Image:
This is my first final image for my second shoot as I have developed it one Photoshop. Thanks to the video I have used I tried to make the background of my image and its color look like the image of Lee Friedlander that I did the 5C's on and I'm quite happy with this as well.
Photo Shoot 3:
This photo shoot I think was my best so far the images I took were successful and it links perfectly to I have chosen and very grateful for coming out with my family and having my brother (In the image) let me take photos of him as the perfect model.
Best Images:
I chose these images as my best images because they resemble the theme that I have chosen and the picture on the right I believe is close to the 5C's lee fried lander image I have chosen.
Worst Images:
These are my worst images because I believe that the white balance for the first 2 images isn't what I wanted and they don't link to my theme at all.The last image is too blurry and out of focus and it would be hard to edit out the background.

Evaluation:
For this project we started by looking at framing. I then did some further research and decided to focus on the theme of framing in light and dark and mirroring with landscapes. The reason why I chose this theme is in my opinion I think that framing is what interested me as a photographer and I believe that it gives more meanings than light and dark.
During this project the part I enjoyed the most was going out with my family to take lots of images that represent framing in landscapes and each image was amazing thanks to the camera setting, shutter speed because when I was taking images while family member was driving I was on manual and I noticed that It was too blurry and then I remembered I should have used shutter speed instead and I managed to take over 500 images thanks to shutter speed.
On the next project the techniques I would like to develop further is making sure my images are balance and fit into my project theme otherwise the image is useless and will drag my grade down. I have realized to get the best shots, I need to be prepared to work in my own time and away from school for example in areas such as landscapes and urban areas.
I have encountered many problems in this project due to my failure of planning such as taking too long to go out and during the time in lesson when I couldn't upload any images on my website I would just waste time instead of planning instead and that has really affected the way I work in this subject. In the end I need to make sure I plan perfectly and thoroughly to reach my necessary grades.
Another problem I have encountered at the start of the project I couldn't use Photoshop very well to finalise my images and it was quite hard to work around it but thanks to the video and many more I have learnt many ways to use it.
My favorite part of the subject was going out with my family and taking the images of the landscapes, not much of the images I took was linked to my theme in framing but it mostly links with landscapes which is the next project so I will be having a head start against my entire class.
By researching photographers who have focused on framing and light and dark for their main body of work, I have learnt that taking these pictures requires skill, patience and perseverance. I really enjoyed using shutter speed on my camera and I enjoyed this project a lot as well.
